About Colorado’s Rich History and Higher Education Colleges

Colorado is the 38th state, joining the statehood on August 1, 1876.  Its capital city is Denver, a city in America that has earned the nickname “Mile High” because of it being one mile above sea level.  As a state, Colorado is nicknamed the “Centennial State” and “Colorful Colorado.”

Discovered and once largely inhabited by Native American Indians, Colorado is known for its numerous mountains, wildlife, state and national parks like the Rocky Mountain National Park, the Denver Omelet, cold, snowy winters, rivers, history and natural resources.  Major industries in Colorado include telecommunications, manufacturing, bioscience, financial services, information technology, digital media, tourism, aerospace and natural gas.  Colorado is bordered by other Western states like Nebraska, Arizona, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Utah.

For-profit colleges and universities located in Colorado offer two and four-year degrees as well as classroom and distance learning programs.  The for-profit colleges and universities in the state with on-site classroom hubs, are often located in heavily trafficked areas near shopping centers and businesses, making it easy to commute to and from the campuses.  Amongst Colorado’s for-profit postsecondary schools are:

  • Colorado Technical University
  • Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design
