When you find yourself with free time the first thing you may want to do is hang out with friends, watch television, surf the web, or do anything else other than class work. While these activities are fun to take part in and a good break from studying, do not fall into the bad habit of letting these activities take up all your free time. There are many ways to still have fun while staying productive and keeping yourself ahead of the workload for the semester.
One way to use your free time wisely is to plan your week ahead of time. In the beginning of the week schedule your time accordingly. Space your class work out so you do not feel overwhelmed at the end of the week. Sometimes classes have the same project deadlines so if you plan ahead of time and use your spare time to complete projects ahead of schedule you will take some pressure off yourself for the rest of the week. Stress and pressure become a major part of life during college so planning for upcoming weeks ahead of time is vital to keep yourself stress free.
Another way to stay productive in college is to use your professors’ office hours. If there are questions you may have about an upcoming test, or future project this is a perfect time to ask. Class hours are good for quick questions you may have but sometimes professors have places to be and other classes to attend so you may not get their full attention. During the professors ‘offices hours you will have their full and direct attention, that’s what office hours are for. Use these hours to your advantage, they are designated for your benefit.
Finally, be sure to keep yourself on track. The hardest part of being productive is staying productive. Once you plan your schedule sticking to it is the key to success. Avoid temptations from friends. If your friends ask you to hang out but it interferes with plans to do class work, join them another time. Think about it this way; if you go out with your friends push aside your planned set of work, you will only be creating more work for yourself the next day. There are many variables in college that could throw off your work week, but the ones that you can control, be sure to make wise decisions.
