Where should you search for scholarships?

It can sometimes be difficult to know here to look for scholarships. Adults seeking to return to school are in a different situation than high school students who have the benefit of guidance and/or career counselors to point them in the right direction. While adult learners may not be in the same position as high school students, they are certainly in a position to locate scholarships that fit their needs. They just may have to go about their search in a different way; however, the end results they achieve will be similar, namely locating scholarships so they can defray the cost of their educations.

Online Search

Certainly the easiest and most popular way to search for scholarships is likely to be online. You can potentially locate many different websites that offer various scholarships in many different categories that range from financial need to career of choice. Depending how long you have been out of high school or if you have some college credits in your background, you may also find some academic scholarships. The good thing about researching scholarships online is because you can find websites such as www.scholarships.com that provide a great deal of information in one place. This eliminates the need to go to individual websites in order to locate the qualifications necessary for an individual scholarship.

Financial Aid Office

No matter how old you are when you return to college, it is always possible to find scholarship information at the financial aid office. In fact, you may find a great deal of this information in the financial aid packet you receive when you first enroll in college. However, one thing you should keep in mind is that you may not find all of the scholarships available since the financial aid packages tend to be focused on students entering college right out of high school. This means you may find it necessary to conduct some research on your own in order to take advantage of all the options that are available to adult returning students.

Local Corporations

Another source of scholarships exists within the local corporate world. Many large corporations have scholarships available for those in the local community for various reasons including the following:

  • Adult children of employees
  • Spouses of employees
  • Members of various organizations
  • Students enrolled in certain curriculums
  • Scholarships based on the demographics of a local region
  • Scholarship award based upon ethnic origin, nationality, religious affiliation and other minority groups

The important thing to remember is not to rely on one scholarship to cover all your expenses. If you are seeking funds to cover the majority of your educational expense you should apply for everything for which you qualify. You also should keep in mind that some scholarships have a specific amount they offer while others set their awards based on the educational costs of the financial institution you wish to attend. Before you make a decision it is essential to weigh all your options and choose those that are most likely to meet your needs.
